Peace, conflict and security in Africa. New challenges and new perspectives

03-05 November 2010

Peace, conflict and security in Africa. New challenges and new perspectives

Between 3 and November, the seminars “Peace, conflict and security in Africa. New challenges and new perspectives” will look at the current security situation in Africa, including the specific cases of Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Liberia in the analysis. The seminars - coordinated by Óscar Mateos, a collaborator of the ICIP and a researcher for peace - will bring together leading analysts, academics, activists, institutional representatives and members of civil society from Europe and Africa.

The participants include Kenneth Omeje, lecturer in international relations at the United States International University in Nairobi, Kenya; Asma Ismail Bushara, member of the Institute for the Development of Civil Society of Sudan and the Group of 40 Women Leaders (G-40) of the Horn of Africa; Jannie Malan, from the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes; Tim Murithi, of South Africa's Institute for Justice and Reconciliation; and Dr. Admore Kambudzi, Secretary of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, and general Pierre-Michel Joana, Special Advisor for African peacekeeping and security to the Directorate General for External Relations of the European Union Council.

The situation of some conflicts, the development of peace processes, the role of civil societies and regional organisation and the increasing role played by the African Union will be some of the main themes of debate. The seminars are a tool for reflection on the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of African countries. They are organised by ICIP and Casa Africa, in collaboration with the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), and will be held between 3 and 5 November at the CCCB.

Entry is free, but we suggest you confirm your attendance as soon as possible at activitats.icip@gencat.cat or by calling 93 554 42 82.
