    Session: Analysis Tools: World Social Forum, Dakar 2011

    The event will start with an introduction by Jordi Calvo on the role of the WSF in a context of crisis and declines in social rights. Esther Vivas (Revolta Global), Ricard Vilaregut (Ciemen), Eulàlia Reguant (Justícia i Pau), Tica Font (ICIP) and Luis Blanco (IAC) will give their opinions on the outlook for Dakar 2011. The session will be chaired and moderated by Rafael Grasa, President of the ICIP.

    All participants attended the activities of the World Social Forum held in Dakar, Senegal.

    The event will take place on Monday, 2 March, from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm, in the Sala d’actes of the Col•legi de Periodistes de Catalunya.

    ESCOLTA Performance Project

    The first performance of the Escolta project will take place at the ICIP headquarters on 23 February. Escolta is a public and participatory art project led by Josep Asunción and Gemma Guasch, which will take place at the ICIP throughout 2011, with a series of artistic initiatives aimed at provoking reflection as well as providing an experience based on listening as a condition for peace.

    Presentation of the book "Pau Casals, writings and speeches: peace, peace, peace forever!" by Josep Maria Figueres

    Those participating in the presentation are Arcadi Oliveres, President of the International University of Peace, Rafael Grasa, president of the ICIP; Núria Ballester, director of the Vil·la Pau Casals Museum; Joan Franquesa, president of Òmnium-Sant Cugat, and Josep M. Figueres, the author of the book.

    The book "Pau Casals, writings and speeches: peace, peace, peace forever!" is is a joint publication by the ICIP and Angle Editorial, and is part of the "Peace and Non-Violence Classics" collection.

    Conflicts in the Mediterranean: What role does the religious factor play?

    As part of the season of "Mediterranean Debates", the session aims to assess the relationship between religion and conflict in the Middle East and North Africa based on recent academic studies of the subject. The objective is to analyse the influence of religion in violent conflicts in the region.

    Lecture on Côte d'Ivoire by Albert Caramés of the ONUCI and an ICIP collaborator

    Caramés will discuss the war that began in 2002 and in particular, the situation since the second round of the elections which took place on 28 November 2010, which has led to tension in Côte d'Ivoire. The investitures of both candidates, Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara, have received support from various international bodies based on the many economic intererests within the country. What is the best solution for a future for peace and stable development in Côte d'Ivoire? What is the best way of finding a mediation that ensures peace?.

    Exhibition: “Palabras descalzas. Mujeres haciendo paz” [Barefoot words. Women making peace] and the premiere of the documentary “Om Mohammad” in Olot

    Olot will be the first town where the documentary "Om Mohamed. La madre de Mohamed" [Om Mohammad. The mother of Mohammad] will be shown. The film focuses on the everyday life of a woman in Gaza. The projection will be accompanied by the photograph exhibition “Palabras descalzas. Mujeres haciendo paz” [Barefoot words. Women making peace] by Dani Lagartofernández. The two projects, both produced by the ICIP, aim to raise the profile of the mediating role of women in conflicts.

    The event on the 29th will begin at 6:30 pm, with a guided visit to the exhibition, which is located opposite the Town Hall. The documentary will be shown at 7 pm in the Casal Marià in Olot, and will be followed by a talk by the director, Dani Lagartofernández, and Mohamed Rujailah, the son of the documentary's central figure. It will be presented by Veva Ruiz, the councillor responsible for cooperation in Olot, and Elena Grau, the ICIP's head of training and dissemination.

    School Day of Non-violence and Peace: presentation of the book by Pau Casals

    Wednesday 26 January sees the presentation in Barcelona of the book “Pau Casals, writings and speeches: peace, peace, peace forever!” This book, published jointly by the ICIP and Angle Editorial, is part the Peace and Non-Violence Classics collection. The speakers at the event, which will commemorate the School Day of Non-violence and Peace, will be Josep Mª Carreté Nadal, general manager of the Pau Casals Foundation, Rafael Grasa, President of the ICIP, Josep Mª Figueres, the book's editor, and the philosopher Josep Maria Terricabras, who will discuss the relationship between music and peace. A video of Pau Casals’ speech to the United Nations General Assembly will be shown during the event. The presentation will begin at 6:30 pm at the Casa del Gremi de Velers, carrer Sant Pere més Alt, 1, in Barcelona.

    Seminar: "Thinkers for peace, thoughts for making peace"

    Organised jointly by the Catalan International Institute for Peace and the GREC organisation for conflict resolution, this seminar aims to highlight and disseminate the role of some key female figures in the construction of the culture of peace. During the eight sessions, the contributions of writers and thinkers including Virginia Woolf, Petra Kelly and Berta Von Suttner will be analysed. The ICIP head of Training and Dissemination, Elena Grau, will participate in the seminar. The sessions will take place from 6 October onwards in the Fontana d'Or building at carrer Ciutadans, 19, Girona.

    Presentation of the new book by Rafael Grasa

    “Fifty years of progress in research for peace. Trends and ideas for observation, research and action," is the title of new book by the UAB lecturer in international relations and president of the ICIP, Rafael Grasa. The book, published as part of the Investigación X Pau collection published by the Government of Catalonia's Office for the Promotion of Peace and Human Rights, will be presented at 6 pm on 15 December, at the ICIP headquarters (Gran Via 658, Barcelona).

    Also participating will be the director of the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace at Universitat Jaume I in Castelló, Vicente García Guzmán, and the director of the Office for the Promotion of Peace and Human Rights, Xavier Badia.

    Round table on the strategy for boycotts, disinvestments and sanctions against Israel

    As part of its Just Peace and Globalisation programme, the Barcelona Youth Council (BYC) is organising a round table to debate the wisdom and effectivness of the Boycott, Disinvestments and Sanctions Strategy (BDS) against Israel. Taking part in the round table will be the president of the ICIP, Rafael Grasa; Matilde Gomis-Perez, a development cooperation professional and an expert on Palestine; Jordi Cortés, a political scientist, sociologist and expert in international cooperation, and Aritz Nafarroa, a member of the Red de Enlace con Palestina (Link Network with Palestine).

    The BYC has been working in cooperation with Palestine, and with the Youth Council of the city of Nablus for some years. At a local level, it created the With Palestine at Heart Campaign in Barcelona four years ago. It has grown significantly and among its other initiatives, it organised the first session of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine. The event will take place at 7 pm on 19 December, at the Espacio Joven La Fontana (Gran de Gràcia, 190, Barcelona).

    Round table on militarism in the Third World

    Fonollosa Town Council, in cooperation with other institutions, is organising the round table on “The Third World and Militarism,” which will include the participation of Pere Ortega, coordinator of the JM Delàs Peace Studies Centre and Tica Font, director of the ICIP, among others. 8.30 pm on 26 November, at the ACR Falso offices in Fonollosa.

    XIII Seminar on International Humanitarian Law. Contemporary dynamics of international law.

    A two-day seminar organised by the Rovira y Virgili University in Tarragona and the Red Cross, with the cooperation of the ICIP, including debates on the development and contradictions of International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law, peacekeeping operations and progress and shortcomings of the international criminal justice system in the new world order, among others. The specific case of Guantanamo will be analysed at the seminars. The seminar will take place on 18 and 19 November.

    Talk by the plastic artist for peace and researcher Álex Carrascosa

    Álex Carrascosa, who works with the Gernika Gogoratuz Peace and Art Research Centre and is the co-founder of the artivist collective ArtamugarriaK, among other groups, advocates making art a tool for dialogue based on what he calls Día-Tekhné. This concept, which is part of "artivism" - a genre of contemporary art - involves laboratory-workshops, happenings and direct action in order to move from an artistic condemnation of war to artivist promotion of peace. This personal concept is discussed in his book “Día-Tekhné. Dialogue through art”, published by Bakeaz/Gernika Gogoratuz. The talk with Carrascosa will take place at 6 pm on 11 November, at the ICIP headquarters (Gran Via 658, Barcelona).

    Tribute to Raimon Panikkar

    The event will be introduced by the Rector of the University of Lerida, Joan Viñas, and the participants include Ignasi Boada, lecturer in the Faculties of Communication Sciences and Philosophy at Ramon Llull University and the Instituto Superior de Ciencias Religiosas, which was a participant in the Academicum Seminar of the Fundación Vivarium, and who was Raimon Panikkar's secretary. The event will take place at 8 pm in the Salón de Actos of the Faculty of Arts (Facultad de Letras) of the University of Lerida, Edificio Rectorado (Plaza Víctor Siurana, 1), and is organised by the Lerida Unesco Interreligious Dialogue Group.

    Seminar: “Catalonia-Palestine. An overview and outlook for Catalan cooperation with development and the construction of peace in the Palestinian occupied territory.”

    The objective of this seminar is to take stock of the current mechanisms available to various institutional and non-governmental actors in the field of cooperation with development, humanitarian action, the construction of peace and political impact on social transformation. At the same time, it aims to contribute to an open and thorough debate on the outlook for the future, and the main challenges faced by Catalan cooperation in the Palestinian territories. The seminar is organised by the Palestina al Cor and Nova associations, in collaboration with the Catalan Agency for Cooperation and Development and ICIP, among others. It will take place on 10 November, from 9.30 am onwards, at the La Sedeta Civic Centre in Barcelona.

    Seminars: “Peace, conflict and security in Africa. New challenges and new perspectives

    The seminars will look at the current security situation in Africa, including an analysis of specific cases such as Rwanda and Sierra Leone. The seminars, coordinated by Óscar Mateos, an ICIP collaborator and peace researcher, will bring together leading analysts, academics and members of civil society from Europe and Africa. These include Asma Ismail Bushara, of the Institute for the Development of Civil Society in Sudan and the G-40 Women Leaders group (G-40) from the Horn of Africa; Mohamed Salih, professor of Politics of Development at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague; Jannie Malan, member of the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes; and Admore Kambudzi, Secretary of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union.

    The seminars, organised by ICIP and Casa Africa in collaboration with the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), will analyse the situation of Africa's ongoing conflicts, the development of peace processes, the role of civil society and regional bodies, and the emerging role of the African Union as the African countries celebrate the 50th anniversaries of their independence. The inauguration will take place at 6 pm on 3rd November, at the CCCB.

    Presentation in Barcelona of the Israeli-Palestinian organisation "The Parents Circle"

    The NGO Parents Circle – Families Forum was created in 1995, for Palestinians and Israelis who have lost immediate family members in the conflict in the Middle East. Two members of the organisation, Mazen Faraj (Palestine) and Nir Oren (Israel), who lost their father and mother in the conflict respectively came to Barcelona on 3 November to talk about their joint work for peace. The Parents Circle transform their pain into activities and projects to foster dialogue and reconciliation.

    The event was open to the public, and was organised by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and the ICIP, and took place at 7.00 pm in the IEMed assembly room (C/ Girona, 20).

    Seminar on human security in Medellín, Colombia

    Insecurity has been at the top of Colombia's institutional agenda in recent years. The Medellín Human Security Observatory works to ascertain and foster initiatives that ensure security, which is considered an end in itself for the construction of a social state based on the rule of law and comprehensive understanding. This area of work is the focus for the “International Human Security Workshop” in Medellín on 19 October, where the president of the ICIP, Rafael Grasa, will be among the participants. The workshop is structured in three themed panels: community initiatives to tackle insecurity, conditions and situations of insecurity, and perceptions of security policies.

    Lecture: “Defending peace and the human rights of Palestinians and Israelis”

    The well-known pacifist Meir Margalit, coordinator of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and a Jerusalem councillor for the left-wing party Meretz, will give this lecture at 7 pm on Sunday 17 October, in the Sala de Actos in Lloret de Mar Town Hall. The event is organised by the Lloret Platform for Peace collaboration with the ICIP.

    Presentation of the documentary "Mujeres en construcción" [Women Under Construction]

    “Mujeres en construcció” is a film directed by Begoña Atín and Maite Ibáñez and co-produced by Batabat and K-2000, which depicts the process of personal reconstruction among several women who have been victims of terrorist attacks. It is a story which includes aspects like receiving the news of the murder, disbelief, searching for a reason, their maternal role, lack of encouragement, their lack of plans and hopes for the future, the emptiness and loneliness they feel, and their fear, anger and powerlessness.
    The presentation will take place at 8 pm at the Casablanca-Kaplan cinema, at the Jardinets de Gràcia, Passeig de Gràcia, 115, Barcelona.

    Exhibition: The Srebrenica massacre - fifteen years on

    The exhibition "Srebrenica. Memories of a genocide", jointly organised by the ICIP, the UB Solidarity Foundation, the UAB and the Peace and Solidarity Foundation opens on 20 September. The exhibition, with photographs by Alfonso Rodríguez, commemorates the fifteenth anniversary of the massacre of Bosnian Muslims by the Serbian army. The material is the result of a journey he made to Srebrenica last July, to coincide with the anniversary. It is open to the public until 8 October, in the lobby of the Historic Building of the University of Barcelona.

    Seminar "Conditions for the consolidation of peace in Côte d'Ivoire"

    Experts from international organisations including the UNDP, UNESCO and the World Bank, university researchers and local authorities will analyse the outlook for the consolidation of peace in Côte d'Ivoire on three days, from 27 to 29 September, in a seminar organised by the ICIP in the country's capital, Abidjan. The President of the ICIP, Rafael Grasa, will open and close the seminar, and will participate in various sessions.

    Seminar: "Conflicts, Peace and Sustainability in the Mediterranean”

    Organised jointly by the ICIP, the Sustainable Development Advisory Council and the IEMed.     Regional conference: “Multilateralism, civil society and conflict prevention in the Americas”

    The Argentinean Council for International Relations (CARI), the Regional Coordinator for Economic and Social Research (CRIES) and the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) are jointly organising this regional conflict held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Rafael Grasa, President of the ICIP, will contribute to the session covering "The United Nations and its agencies in America, conflict prevention and mechanisms of participation by civil society”. He will also participate in the round table focusing on "Multilateralism, citizens' diplomacy and the prevention of violence and armed conflicts within the new hemispherical relations”.

    Organised by the "Sur Clío" Research group of the University of Almería and the Andalucia Regional Government's Culture of Peace in Andalucia Excellence Project. Experiences and Challenges, the VII Culture of Peace Seminar from Andalucia on "Challenges for Peace in the Twenty-First Century" will provide training for skilled students to analyse and understand complex and interconnected situations in the present and future, providing them with resources within a contextualised framework to formulate hypotheses and transformational practical proposals.     Seminar: "The fight against impunity: The outlook for the future"

    The seminar will feature analysis by jurists, lawyers, and university lecturers, who due to their profession or their academic work have extensive knowledge of the work done in the fight against impunity and for the right to justice. The seminar is structured in two lecture and debate sessions which will analyse various cases related with the search for justice and the fight against impunity in the jurisdictional and judicial sphere, in Spain and internationally: Guatemala and national mechanisms for justice with the support of the United Nations; the universal jurisdiction, the Pinochet case and the Scilingo case; and justice and impunity in Central Africa.

    Preparation of the declaration on the Human Right to Peace

    An International Committee for the Preparation of the declaration on the Human Right to Peace will meet in the Parliament of Catalonia between 31 May and 2 June. This meeting will be jointly organised by the ICIP and the AEDIDH. The objective is to produce the final wording of this declaration, which will be presented in public on 2 June. The writing process began in 2006, and has included contributions from organisations and individuals from all over the world. Among the members of the International Committee are Jasminka Dzumhur, the Ombudsperson of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Kinhide Mujakoski, President of the Osaka International Peace Centre; Zonke Zanele Majodina, Deputy Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission; and Belela Herrera Sanguinetti, Former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay.

    Final "Manresa solidarity with Haiti" event

    Tica Font, director of the International Catalan Institute for Peace, will be participating in the final event of the "Manresa solidarity with Haiti" campaign, promoted by Manresa Town Council and the Municipal Solidarity Council. The event also features the participation of Carles Soler, of Veterinarians Without Frontiers. The lecturers covered the structural causes leading to this catastrophe and the emergency projects. The aim is to use the campaign to provide support for post-emergency and reconstruction projects in the Caribbean country.

    Round table: "Combatants for peace: changing arms for dialogue in the Israel-Palestine conflict"

    The Barcelona Forum on Decentralisation Governance and Conflict Prevention

    The Office for the Promotion of Peace and Human Rights of the Government of Catalonia, the United Nations Staff College, and the International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP) are organising the Forum for Decentralised Governance and conflict prevention. This is a forum for debate aimed at personnel of the UNO, the Catalan government, academic staff and personnel in organisations of civil society, and will analyse experiences in order to identify good and bad practices in this area, analyse how a policy of decentralisation can contribute to preventing conflict and resolving difficult juxtapositions of cultural conditions in broader political terms.

    Opening of the headquarters of the International Catalan Institute for Peace.

    The minister of Home Affairs. Institutional Relations and Participation, Joan Saura, and the President of the Parliament of Catalonia, Ernest Benach, will open the headquarters of the International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP) in Gran Via in Barcelona, accompanied by the ICIP president, Rafael Grasa. The members of the ICIP Board of Governors and the director, Tica Font, will also be participating.
