Second international session of the RTP

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine will examine the alleged complicity of multinationals with Israel

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine (RTP) is holding its second international session in London from 20 to 22 November, after its first session in Barcelona in March. On this occasion, the RTP will examine the alleged complicity of large businesses in the violation of international law and human rights by Israel.

At this second session, the jury will study cases of corporations providing services and infrastructures to Israeli settlements on the West Bank and in East Jerusalem; of foreign banks and institutions that are providing financial services to the residents of these settlements; and foreign companies that participate in the exportation of arms and war infrastructure.

The London session will be structured in the same way as the Barcelona session: experts and witnesses will be invited to present the different cases. On this occasion, the confirmed participants on the jury include Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Nobel Peace laureate 1976; Aminata Traore, author and former Minister of Culture of Mali; and Michael Mansfield, barrister, President of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers in the United Kingdom.

The Russell Tribunal on Palestine is the result of an initiative by civil society, and is structured as a people's international tribunal to judge the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The book on the Barcelona session

To coincide with the second international session of the tribunal, the ICIP has published a book containing all the material that was produced at the first international session in Barcelona. The first part includes the document prepared by the Russell Tribunal's Committee of experts from Catalonia and Spain, which the tribunal used to state the necessary precedents to make a ruling. The second part includes the testimony by all the experts who appeared during the session; this shows what happened in Barcelona in detail, and provides a better understanding of how the RTP works. The third part contains the conclusions of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine at its Barcelona session. These are preliminary conclusions that will be added to those of other sessions that will be held in London and New York, and which will culminate in the final conclusions that will be announced at the South Africa session in September 2011. Finally, a series of appendices are included which provide useful information on the Barcelona session.
