Catalan municipalities in the IS

Through the " SI-LOCAL" awards and the compilation of Catalan projects for the IS, announced by the Commissioner's Office, the aim is to highlight all those municipalities that have directed local projects concerned with the introduction of Information and Communication Technologies or the Information Society in general.

The "SI-LOCAL" awards for Information Society technologies seek to reward those local councils that have made a particular effort to promote initiatives relating to the application of Information Society technologies in the course of 1998.

This is the first series of awards to be made, the aim of which is to sensitise citizens and all the Local Authorities to far-reaching technologies, which have an impact not only on the production field, but also on all kinds of social relationships.

The local councils, the tier of government that is closest to the citizen, have an important role to play in the revolution that is taking place within the Information Society, since they can, to a large extent, bring their technologies closer to the citizens in their particular geographical area. This can be achieved by a multitude of approaches, including the generation of initiatives, support for the application of programmes and action to publicise the technologies.

In order to spread knowledge of all these local initiatives and at the same time compile information to facilitate enquiries, the Commissioner's Office has created an access via Internet to the Database of the Municipalities in the IS, so that all those municipalities that have promoted initiatives may register these.
