The Generalitat is the institution in which the self-government of Catalonia is politically organised, and is made up of the Parliament, the President of the Generalitat and the Government. Here you can find everything you might want to know about the functions, responsibilities, organisation, economic resources, and history of the institutions and offices of the Generalitat.
Historical origins
Reconstruction of the different stages that Catalan institutional policy has gone through since the creation of the Diputació del General (Committee of Deputies) (14th-17th centuries), the medieval predecessor to the Generalitat, up until the establishment of the modern Executive.
Administration Structure
The Generalitat constitutes a system made up of agents informed by the principal of coordination of all its organs. This means that each organ must adjust its means not only to its own ends but also to those of the Generalitat Administration as a whole, without impeding other organs or making it difficult for them to fulfil the competencies they have been allocated.

Competencies
The Statute of Autonomy gives the Generalitat of Catalonia the powers which enable it to carry out self-government. These can be exclusive, concurrent and shared with the State or executives.
Financing system
The real exercise of the powers adopted by the Generalitat, aimed at achieving a self-government that implies an authentic political and administrative autonomy, requires being able to have the necessary financial means available.
The territory’s administrative organisation
Catalonia is divided administratively into municipalities and counties. In addition, the conurbation of Barcelona has metropolitan bodies. Finally, other institutions dependant on the State should be mentioned: the provincial councils, the Delegation of the State Government and the Justice Administration.
