Visitors to Catalonia's beaches should take certain safety precautions if they plan to swim, sunbathe or do water sports.

The summer bathing season is from June 21 to September 24 and during this period surveillance and monitoring programmes will be in place to ensure safety for all users. Beaches will be supervised by a team managed by the Red Cross and a federation of companies, whose responsibility is to assess the state of the sea and indicate whether bathing is advisable. They will use a system of flags (red, green and yellow) to show whether it is safe to swim..
