In accordance with the European Union’s objective of earmarking 3% of the GDP to research in 2010 and increasing the number of researchers by 750,000, within the framework of the Research and Innovation Plan (2005-2008), in Catalonia a research career has been defined that covers from researcher training to their stabilisation in the public and private systems.
A research career defines four stages: pre-doctoral education, postdoctoral education, pre-consolidation and consolidation or stabilisation of researchers. It equips each of these stages with the instruments that allow and encourage career development both in the public sector (universities, research centres, hospitals, governments, etc.) as well as the private sector (companies or other institutions). Meanwhile, it encourages mobility of research personnel between countries and the academic and business spheres.
