The Government has decided to award the Generalitat's Medalla d'Or to the doctor Moisès Broggi and the actress Montserrat Carulla, as a show of recognition and thanks by Catalan institutions for their extraordinary contributions to the country. And on this occasion, it should be noted that this is the first doctor and the first actress to receive this distinction.
The Generalitat's Medalla d'Or is the highest honour which the Government confers and expresses the Government of the Generalitat's recognition to persons who have given eminent and extraordinary services to Catalonia in the political, social, economic, cultural or scientific fields. Since it was created, in 1978, it has been awarded to 48 personalities and three organisations; in the past year, the ex-presidents Jordi Pujol and Pasqual Maragall received it.
Moisès Broggi, born in 10980, has dedicated his whole life to medicine, even in the most adverse conditions, when the Francoist Summary Tribunal prohibited him from entering any hospital due to his participation in the war. Always interested in culture and humanism, in 1981 he received the Sant Jordi Cross and this year he was also awarded the National Culture Prize.
Montserrat Carulla i Ventura, born in Barcelona in 1930, is one of the best-known Catalan actresses, both in the theatre and in the cinema and television. In 1995 she received the Sant Jordi Cross, and in 1999 the Gold Medal for Artistic Merit.
